Let me explain to you genuine ass holes of society. The Earth rotates around the sun. Every rotation is equal to one year (well 365.25 days to be exact, hence the leap year every 4 years).

Imagine a pole going through the Earth. All the way though. This pole goes through the north end down through the south end. Now this pole helps show the Earth in a strait position. The two ends of this pole at the north and south end represent the earths axis. Here’s an interesting concept. The Earth is never sitting straight up. Imagine the Earth with it’s axis, but tilt it a bit.

We all know the equator, right? Does anyone know why it’s warmer than the rest of the Earth? (Spoiler alert) It’s because it’s the closest part of the Earth to the sun. That’s it. It’s closer to the sun, thus it’s warmer.

This same logic happens when it’s winter verses summer. Have you ever heard the term “spinning on its axis”? Well this comes from how the Earth rotates. Remember what you imagined with the slightly tilted Earth with its axis at either end? Well it’s always changing position.

(This is where it gets tricky) Imagine looking at this earth with the pole from a top view. Right above the north end of the pole. Now picture a ring around the pole. Like the rings of Saturn. The pole coming from the north end of the Earth will be touching the pole, thus tilting the Earth. This pole will do an entire rotation of the ring in one hole year, while the Earth will spin 365 times every year.
(A year is when the Earth rotates around the sun once)

Now combine everything that I’ve just told you to make sense of things. Winter happens when the axis is farther away from the sun and summer happens when the Axis get closer to the sun.
